Right before the end of the year, I posted a video on the importance of listening to the Lord for yourself and the instructions He has for you in this new year. There are always many words released that we can grab onto, but are they truly for us and our lives? Not every word is for everybody, and we must be able to grab a hold of the ones we know the Holy Spirit is speaking over us. If we get into God’s presence and seek Him for ourselves to hear what He is saying, then we will be able to discern between the ones that are to be guiding our lives and the ones that are not for our season.
I will give you an example. Prophetic words from many well-known prophets and leaders are circulating, declaring this is your year of acceleration. This is the year when you come out of the wilderness and birthing new things. This is the year when you will step into new assignments, and your voice will be heard. Then there are other words that say we should be quiet, be still, and prioritize being in the secret place with the Lord over building. We should prioritize fasting, intercession, and slowing down. Do these go together? Which is for us? The only way we know what to grab a hold of is to seek the presence of the Lord for ourselves and ask Him to speak to us personally. For some that have been in the preparation season for many years, even decades, it is the time to build and birth. These ones have been in the secret place with the Lord, allowing Him to burn up the flesh patterns in their lives to prepare them to be released. They have leaned into deep soul healing and transformation to be able to carry and steward a new wineskin for the church and nations. Their lives are now rooted in the secret place. Therefore, once they start building and birthing, their foundation is secure. If this is you, you know deep in your spirit what is upon us now is what God has been preparing you for!
For others, that process of transformation is just beginning. Their cycle is one of being dedicated only to the secret place, allowing the fires of purification to burn away the flesh and sanctify their hearts. They are learning how to pray, fast, and study the Word. They are allowing God to heal them of pain and trauma that keeps them in destructive cycles of thinking and behavior. For those in this cycle, it is not the time to birth and to build; it is the time to dwell in the wilderness.
In Hebrew, wilderness is the word midbâr (H4057). It means “the place where God speaks.” We often want to build and give birth before we have spent the necessary time in the wilderness learning how to hear God. The times we are living in require us to know His voice. Deception is high, and witchcraft is rampant in the media and church. We will be deceived and controlled if we are not grounded in the secret place and can hear the Holy Spirit’s voice. Our own soul will deceive and control us if the necessary refining has not taken place.
Knowing our season is crucial to fulfilling our destiny. We can do the right things in the wrong season and give the enemy an open door to our lives. We can be ahead of God’s timing and give the enemy an open door. We can be trying to push open doors before we are ready, which can lead to heartache down the road because our souls are not mature enough to handle the warfare that comes with that open door.
I have repeatedly learned these lessons throughout my twenty-year walk with the Lord. I often tried to move too fast, push open doors I was not ready to walk through, and make my own way out of God’s timing. God, in His faithfulness, only allowed me to press open those that would ultimately humble me and be part of the restoration of my soul.
As someone who has been in a wilderness season for the last seven years, I believe it is a beautiful place to be. It is not a season you want to rush through or try to push your way out of. Instead, lean into it. Soak in God’s presence. Allow the refining in your life. It is worth it! Your spiritual eyes and ears are matured. Your soul gets healed and transformed, and you will be ready for when that season does come when God says to you, “Now is the time to birth and build!” Let’s not skip the season where we learn how to abide in the secret place. We must dwell in the wilderness. We must build the foundation first. What will be built won’t be able to stand if we do not secure our foundation first.
16 Father, out of Your honorable and glorious riches, strengthen Your people. Fill their souls with the power of Your Spirit 17 so that through faith the Anointed One will reside in their hearts. May love be the rich soil where their lives take root. May it be the bedrock where their lives are founded so that together 18-19 with all of Your people they will have the power to understand that the love of the Anointed is infinitely long, wide, high, and deep, surpassing everything anyone previously experienced. God, may Your fullness flood through their entire beings. Ephesians 3:16-19, Voice
24 “So, everyone who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a sensible man who built his house on bedrock. 25 The rain fell, the rivers flooded, the winds blew and beat against that house, but it didn’t collapse, because its foundation was on rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a stupid man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain fell, the rivers flooded, the wind blew and beat against that house, and it collapsed — and its collapse was horrendous!” Matthew 7:24-27, CJB
10 So I led them out of the land of Egypt and brought them into the wilderness. Ezekiel 20:10, ESV
14 But once she has nothing, I’ll be able to get through to her.
I’ll entice her and lead her out into the wilderness where we can be alone,
and I’ll speak right to her heart and try to win her back.
15 And then I’ll give her back her vineyards;
I’ll turn the valley of Achor, that “Valley of Trouble,”
into a gateway of hope.
In the wilderness of exile she’ll learn to respond to Me
the way she did when she was young, when I brought her out of Egypt.
16 And I swear when that day comes, she’ll call Me “my husband” and never address Me again as “my master” as she did those other gods. 17 She’ll never invoke the name of any other master again.
Everyone will forget that gods by that name ever existed. 18 When that day comes, this is what I’ll do for My people: I’ll make a covenant for them with the wild animals and flying birds and crawling insects, and they’ll agree never to devour her crops again. I’ll smash all the bows and swords and weapons that could be used to invade their land, and they’ll live in security.
(to His reclaimed bride) 19 I’m going to marry you, and this time it’ll be forever in righteousness and justice. Our covenant will reflect a loyal love and great mercy;
