Have you ever noticed the words at the beginning of each Psalm? They have headings that will say "A Psalm of David," " A Psalm of Asaph," or "A Song of Ascents." Although we might not notice these titles, they give us insight into the Psalm.
One of these phrases we find in the introduction of some Psalms is " A Maskil." Thirteen Psalms are titled as a Maskil. They are Psalms 32, 42, 44, 45, 52, 53, 54, 55, 74, 78, 88, 89, and 142. Why is this important, and why does it matter?
The Hebrew word maskil is Strong's 4905. It means a poem or song of contemplation, but if you trace this word down to its roots, it means to be prudent, circumspect, have insight, have success, prosper, and wisdom. The thirteen Maskil Psalms hold keys for wisdom, success, and prosperity.
At first glance, you may not see the theme that runs through all these Psalms, but as you dig deeper, you see a deep calling into prayer and deliverance. The results of prayer and deliverance are walking in covenant and intimacy with our Bridegroom and defeat of our enemies.
Let's take a look at some examples.
